Little Moms or Unwed Mothers

The Vagina Monologues are coming to Gwangju again. Last year was the first year they were performed in Gwangju in English.

The performers and organizers had their first meeting this past Feb 24. These volunteers will be giving up every Sunday afternoon to rehearse. Also keep an eye out for their fundraisers.

The Vagina Monologues are held all over the world every spring. The organization requires that funds raised be given to local organizations that help to stop violence against women. Last year four groups in Gwangju were given money. These groups provide assistance to women in crisis. These homes or shelters are difficult to find out about as they probably should be since the women are fleeing abusive husbands or families.

This year an article came up as a new organization to explore to give funds to women in need. The Hankyoreh had an article on a newly emerged program in Gwangju. The article introduces the social issue of young unwed mothers in Korea and announces the assistance that is being given in Gwangju. It reads like a community quick fix. Korean Gender Cafe offers a critique about the discourse that is used to talk about the unwed mothers. I highly recommend you take a look at the article and then follow on to the research and information on the KUMSN. Hopefully, the experience of KUMSN can be given to this emergent program in Gwangju, which seems to need some mentoring of its own.
